Gypsum finish DOVA-802 often called plaster finish or gypsum plastering) is a popular alternative to traditional sand-cement plastering. It involves applying a layer of gypsum directly onto brick, block, or concrete surfaces to create a smooth, ivory-white surface ready for painting. Here is a breakdown of why it’s a favourite in modern construction and how it works.
Avoid
Wet Areas: Gypsum is great, but it’s a
"thirsty" material. Do not use it in bathrooms or external walls
where it will be exposed to constant moisture or rain, as it can soften
and lose its bond.
Check
the Thickness: Ideally, the coat should be around 6mm
to 15mm. If the wall is very uneven, it’s better to fix the masonry
first rather than overloading the gypsum.
Skip
the Putty: One of the best perks of a high-quality
gypsum finish is that you can skip the wall putty entirely. You just need
a primer coat before painting.
To give you an accurate estimate, I’ll use the standard coverage rates for gypsum plaster (typically sold in 25 kg or 40 kg bags). The number of bags depends on two things: your wall area and the thickness of the coat.1. The Quick Calculation (Per 100 sq. ft.)Assuming a standard 12mm thickness (standard for interior brick/block walls):
If using 25 kg bags: You will need approximately 4 to 5 bags per 100 sq. ft.
If using 40 kg bags: You will need approximately 2.5 to 3 bags per 100 sq. ft.
If your walls are smoother (like concrete) or rougher (like old brick), the thickness will change. Here is how that affects your bag count:
