Plaster of Paris (POP)
A white powder made by heating gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O) so it loses water and becomes calcium sulfate hemihydrate — chemical formula CaSO₄·½H₂O. Mixed with water it sets quickly into a solid, mouldable mass.
Key Properties
- Quick Setting — sets rapidly into a solid mass when mixed with water, ideal for moulds, casts and sculptures
- Moldability — highly mouldable in paste form, capturing intricate shapes and fine detail accurately
- Adhesion — bonds well to wood, metal and ceramics for a strong hold after setting
- Smooth Finish & Strength — a smooth decorative surface with enough strength to hold rigid shapes once set
- Fire Resistance — gypsum is inherently fire-resistant, a preferred material for certain fireproofing applications
- Reversibility — can be reformed by reabsorbing water, versatile and eco-friendly
